The Armed Forces, Information Technology and Operation Department of the Bundeswehr launched a national program for the development of hypersonic weapons in 2018, said Peter Heilmeier, head of the European MBDA sales office in Germany, told Die Welt.
According to the manager, it is about developing a guided missile, the speed of which will exceed five Mach numbers. Prototype weapons are planned to be completed in the next three years. The product, according to Heilmeier, should counteract Russian UAVs, “Putin’s missiles” and the “new Russian tank”.
The head of the sales department noted that the missile being created is intended exclusively for defensive purposes, and its development is carried out by Germany solely on its own. Nevertheless, in the future it is possible to involve other European countries in the work, as well as integrate a hypersonic missile into the missile defense system.
In May, US Army Lieutenant-General Neil Furgood announced that the ground battery of the first American hypersonic weapon would include four TEL (Transporter Erector Launcher) launchers, each of which would be mounted on an M870 trailer.
In March 2018, during the message to the Federal Assembly, Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced, in particular, the Avangard and Dagger hypersonic weapons.
